Problems connecting to popeye, pyrite, ren, cstc, etc?

As of July 6, 2014, we have restricted these machines to campus-only and VPN access.

All ISU students, faculty & staff have access to the VPN (click here for details).

Department News

  • Late October 2014: Computer Science's email service ( is being migrated to ISU's central IT servers. No downtime is expected.
  • October 15, 2014: Computer Science's DNS servers were replaced between 5 and 7 am.
  • August 10, 2014: Most Computer Science servers–including pyrite, popeye, ren, and cstc–have switched to Iowa State authentication. The same username that accesses CyMail and ASW now works for CS servers!
  • July 6, 2014: Several Computer Science servers–including pyrite, popeye, ren, and cstc–have been moved to private IPs. The ISU VPN ( must now be used to connect from off-campus.
  • June 27, 2014: Pearson & Atanasoff were affected by a campus network outage. Remote access servers were offline during the outage.

    Starting at 9am on Tuesday, June 2, WSUS server ( will be upgraded to a newer version. During this time the software update services provided by will not be available.
  • ADIN and A+ operating system upgrades planned (2015/05/24 06:00)

    On Saturday, there will be upgrades applied to the campus Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) environment. Users may experience brief interruptions to their virtual desktop connections during the upgrade.
