Exchange Email Tips and Tricks

Forwarding your Email

Once you have forwarded your email, your email will be affected by the new account server you choose to forward to and will be subject to its blocked and black lists. Even the major email providers have at times blocked email from Iowa State University. ITS can only provide support to Iowa State email and cannot help once it has left Iowa State University.

  1. Open a browser and go to
  2. Log in with your ISU Net-ID and password.
  3. Click Manage Net-ID.
  4. Click View/Edit your email delivery.
  5. On the next screen, you will see different options regarding your forwarding status. To forward your email to an off-campus email, select Forwarded to email address and enter the address to forward to in the text field.
  6. If you are forwarding email to a non-campus provided service, like Gmail, the Exchange mail box and its saved contents will be deleted.
    • IMPORTANT NOTE: Exchange users who opt to have their mail forwarded must also arrange how they will handle mail, calendar, and address book entries on that system by contacting the Solution Center at 515-294-4000.
  7. Click on Update Now. The screen will now say “Database updated”. Note that changes made during the day take effect about an hour later, while those made after 5pm, but before midnight, will not take effect until after midnight.

Opting Out of Spam Blocking

This service is separate from, and precedes, Outlook (and other email client) Spam Filters. If you would like to reject even more spam using your email client and the PerlMX tags placed on all incoming messages, follow the instructions for your email client on the spam page at

All university email accounts will automatically have the new spam rejection applied*. However, if you would like to opt-out of the new spam rejection:

  1. Go to and log in with your ISU Net-ID and password.
  2. Select Manage user [username].
  3. Select View/Edit your e-mail spam blocking opt-in/opt-out settings.
  4. Click Opt Out of Spam Blocking.

To opt out of greylisting, follow the same basic instructions, but choose View/Edit your e-mail greylisting opt-in/opt-out settings in step 3.

If you have already opted out of greylisting, you will be automatically opted out of spam rejection. To opt back in, follow the above instructions, but in step 4, click “Opt In for Spam Blocking”.

To make certain legitimate communications are not disrupted, senders will be notified if their message was rejected.

If you have any further questions about spam and your university email account, please refer to the spam page at, the spam FAQ at, or contact the IT Services Solution Center at 515-294-4000.
