IMPORTANT UPDATE

Starting June 1, 2013, the department no longer maintains its own DreamSpark site. Users should use the DreamSpark site from Iowa State University instead. More information about ISU DreamSpark is available on this page. The link below is just for you to access your previously downloaded software.

MSDN Academic Alliance

Free, legal copies of various Microsoft products - including Visual Studio 2012, Windows 8 and Windows 2012 Server – can be obtained through the MSDN Academic Alliance. This software allows any student taking a Computer Science course, as well as Computer Science faculty and staff, to be eligible for free software. To acquire this software it is necessary to go to the website located at the following address.

Users will first need to register their account on the MSDNAA website. The username should be your ISU email address.

Once registered and logged in, software may be obtained by following these instructions:

  1. Click the software tab under the ELMS banner then select the desired product in the drop down menu. Click the “Go” button.
  2. Click the “Add to Cart” button and read the Microsoft software agreement. To accept the terms, click the “I accept” button.
  3. Click the “Check Out” button.
  4. Verify the fields on the next page and then click “Next”.
  5. Click on the “Download” link next to the product name and quantity in your cart.
    1. If a product key is required for installation, it will be listed in the “Serial Number” field.
    2. To retrieve a misplaced product key:
      1. Click the “My Software” bar on the left side of the window.
      2. Click “Download” on the Product.
      3. Your key will be listed in the “Serial Number” field.
  6. Download the software by clicking the “Download” . An application will be downloaded that transmits and decrypts your selected software.

The Microsoft downloader will only work in a Windows environment, though there have been reports of people successfully running it under Macintosh and Linux machines through WINE. However, this is not supported by the SSG. Once the file has been downloaded, it may be burned to a CD and installed on any one machine.
